But above all I loved Julie's relaxed, understated vocals which recall those vocal giants of my childhood yet caricature none of them.. "

Wow! What a great afternoon in the company of Julie Dunn and her Trio (Andy Christie, guitar and Qunny Lawrence, drums). Two hours of well balanced Latin, jazz standards and colourful arrangements of film themes with the catchy, bluesy Waiting Room Blues penned by Julie herself. Highlights were the opening number Softly As In A Morning Sunrise (one of my all time faves) and a stunning version of Ellington's Caravan as an encore (played especially for me, I like to think, as I called for an encore at the end when the clapping finally ceased!) I enjoyed the music so much I bought Julie's latest CD which turns out to be every bit as good as the live event with the addition of Tony Coe on saxophone. All in all a brilliant and enjoyable gig and Diane Blackman deserves a huge thank you from jazz-lovers everywhere for bringing such artistes to West Somerset. Diane has a great programme of jazz lined up for the summer - so I urge everyone to make the next one and show Diane the support she needs to keep it going. If you love jazz or simply just like it, make a note of the dates, ring them on the calendar and make sure you get there. You won't be disappointed.
